Minneapolis Families for Public Schools
We are thousands of families from 50+ MPS schools – from Nellie Stone Johnson and NE Middle School to Folwell and Field.
Our vision strong PUBLIC schools that are the heart of our community
We believe MPS can be the best option for families in our city if district leaders invest in students + educators
We’re up against a decades-long push for privatization by the right-wing and corporate democrats
We organize with fierce love for our families + educators, strategic clarity, and a sense of humor
In spring of 2025, we surveyed roughly 1000 families across MPS. Class sizes and educator pay rose to the top as key issues, along with special education and ELL caseloads. In fall of 2025, we campaigned alongside Minneapolis Federation of Educators to win real action on many of these issues, including enforceable class sizes and more reasonable special education caseloads. Now, we’re organizing Sanctuary School Teams in response to Operation Metro Surge.
ICE OUT of our schools: Sanctuary Schools Teams
Since Operation Metro Surge began, thousands of parents, caregivers, and neighbors have mobilized to keep students and our school communities safe by building Sanctuary School teams. In a moment where we’re seeing federal agents deploy chemical weapons on school grounds, abduct preschoolers, and tear families apart, these teams are showing up with care and courage.
Minneapolis Families for Public Schools (MFPS) has organized 50+ teams at public schools in Minneapolis. Now, Minnesotans from across the state are getting trained up to build teams in other cities.

What do Sanctuary School Teams do?
It’s a model adopted from organizing in Chicago. Team members work together to get clear on their school’s safety protocols related to ICE, provide protective presence to keep students safe during pick-up and drop-off times, and coordinate meals, rental assistance, and other aid to keep families safe and together.
