Minnesota Families for Public Schools
We are 1,200 parents and caregivers from 20+ districts across Minnesota – from Bloomington to Bemidji, Minneapolis to Duluth.
Our vision is strong PUBLIC schools that are the heart of our community.
We believe public schools can and should be the best option for our families.
We’re up against the systematic defunding of public education. MN’s per-student funding ranks in the bottom half nationwide.
We’re building power so MN leaders prioritize transformative funding worthy of our brilliant students, dedicated educators, and committed families.
We organize with fierce love for our families + educators, strategic clarity, and a sense of humor.
Our story
2022: A small, dedicated group of Minneapolis parents and caregivers founded the group - originally called Minneapolis Families for Public Schools - out of a deep commitment to our public schools and our educators. We organized alongside Minneapolis Federation of Educators for shared priorities as they pushed for fair pay and won a historic contract with class size limits.
Spring 2024: MFPS and TakeAction Minnesota began working together as MFE was again negotiating their contract and budget cuts were announced in the district. We successfully reinstated some, but not all, of the proposed cuts.
Winter 2024: MFPS founders and TakeAction parent/caregiver teams merged under the banner Minneapolis Families for Public Schools to become one political home for families committed to public education.
Spring 2025: MFPS surveyed roughly 1000 families across Minneapolis Public Schools. Class sizes, special education and English Language Learner caseloads, and budget transparency rose to the top as key issues.
Fall 2025: We campaigned alongside MFE as they negotiated their next contract to win real action on our priority issues: enforceable class sizes and more reasonable caseloads.
Winter 2026: During Operation Metro Surge, our base grew to include families across Minnesota. We trained over 2,000 caregivers and educators to join school-based teams providing mutual aid and protective presence.
Spring 2026: MFPS now stands for Minnesota Families for Public Schools! Our members launched Minnesota Families for Public Schools to reflect our growing, statewide base and commitment to winning transformative funding for public education at the state level.
