TakeAction Minnesota Statement on 2022 Midterm Election Results
(St. Paul, MN) – On Tuesday, Minnesotans voted with vision and clarity to re-elect Democratic executive leaders Governor Tim Walz, Secretary of State Steve Simon, and State Auditor Julie Blaha, and Attorney General Keith Ellison. In addition to maintaining these critical statewide executive offices, Democrats held the Minnesota House and flipped the State Senate, gaining a blue trifecta at the Capitol.
In Hennepin County, after decades of bias in our courts and a dire lack of police accountability, residents were clear: we can’t afford more of the status quo. Voters elected Mary Moriarity as the next Hennepin County Attorney.
TakeAction Minnesota released the following statement:
“Across the state, Minnesotans made it clear: our lives and freedoms are not for sale, and no amount of corporate cash can buy our democracy. Minnesotans came together to demand real solutions so that we can afford our lives and thrive – regardless of our race, income, gender, or zip code.
Last night, we acted together to stop those who seek to undermine our democratic institutions, our communities, and our values. Medicine needs to be affordable. Even police should be accountable. Our systems should deliver support to families, not harm. Abortion is a fundamental right. The climate crisis demands action at all levels of government.
Minnesotans know that the office of the Attorney General is a key role in making sure we can live with safety, dignity, and respect. We came together to re-elect Keith Ellison because he has delivered justice for working people and our families time and again – from taking on greedy corporations, slumlords, and predatory lenders to prosecuting violent police officers.
The election of Mary Moriarty speaks to the enduring demands for justice in Hennepin County. Thousands of Minnesotans voted to end the dangerous status quo and advance change. We congratulate Mary, her coalition campaign, and every voter who showed up to cast their ballot.
By electing Democratic majorities to the state House and Senate, Minnesotans voted to make more possible for our people – from ensuring affordable health care and medicine, to investing in our schools and building a caring economy, to taking urgent action to address the climate crisis. We look forward to working alongside our incumbent and incoming leaders to pass life-affirming policies so that each and every one of us can thrive.
We have always known our work is bigger than one election, and no single candidate or campaign can solve the compounding crises we face. Building a just and joyful future where everyone in our state thrives is a marathon, not a sprint. Last night’s election results prove that people power is stronger than MAGA rhetoric and corporate money, and we will keep organizing to build our democracy and strengthen our freedoms.”
