TakeAction Minnesota calls for removal of GOP officials who spread lies and voted to overturn the will of the people
St. Paul, MN–On Wednesday, January 6 people across the world witnessed an attack on the U.S. Capitol and our country like we have never seen before. TakeAction Minnesota, a multi-racial, grassroots people’s organization released the following statement:
What we witnessed on January 6 in Washington, D.C. was an attack on our country and on us, the people, provoked by a lying, corrupt president attempting to hold on to power at any cost.
We know the truth: Americans turned out in record numbers to vote him out of office, stand by and for each other, and swear in new leaders who respect the oath of office.
With every new piece of information that comes to light, it is clear: this is a historic turning point for our country. We saw what treason – and white privilege – looks like. Armed, white militants invaded our Capitol and threatened our government, including the very Republican leaders complicit in this attack. Police, who deployed brutal tactics against Black and brown protestors marching for equal justice this summer, let a white vigilante mob invade our Capitol. It is a stark and harrowing example of a racist system that fails to keep us safe.
This attack happened because GOP enablers spread lies and misinformation about the 2020 election, stoking division for political gain. GOP officials including U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach and U.S. Rep. Jim Hagedorn violated their oath of office by voting to overturn a free and fair election. U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer and U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber are complicit in spreading baseless claims about the election and do not deserve the honor of representing Minnesotans in Congress.
We are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. Either we fortify our democracy by holding GOP officials accountable or we can leave the door open for domestic attacks on our country and fascism. Precedent matters. This can never happen again.
From the president to Congress and the state Legislature – every Republican who fueled these attacks must be held accountable by removal or resignation.
TakeAction joins hundreds of organizations from across the U.S. calling for the immediate impeachment and removal of President Trump. We call for the expulsion of U.S. Rep. Michelle Fischbach and U.S. Rep. Jim Hagedorn and the immediate resignation of U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer and U.S. Rep. Pete Stauber and every legislator who attended the “Storm the Capitol” rally who has not denounced it.
Through this crisis, our North Star remains steady as ever: together, we are charting a path toward a vibrant, multi-racial democracy that works for all of us. Accountability and consequences for all enablers of this attack is the first and critical step.
