My name is Megan (she/her). I am a mother, a caregiver, and a part of TakeAction’s Leadership Assembly. I want to build a world that includes everyone. No one person knows what we all need, so we need seats at the table for everyone.
In our current two-party system, corporate interests and a lack of empathy are getting the way of building this better world. We need to tear down the old system and rebuild it so that the needs of the people – not profits for the elite – are at its heart.
TakeAction gives me hope and excitement that we may one day see a government that works for and benefits ALL of us, and that we will be the ones governing.
I first became involved with TakeAction MN for the womxn of color dinners. My first time in that place was life-changing. I had never been in a space before where there were only womxn of color, and felt so seen and understood. I have deepened my involvement with TakeAction because I have found community and I believe in TakeAction’s mission of building power and movement by being a uniting force of diverse voices.
I take my role as a leader within TakeAction very seriously. TakeAction has the power to change the political landscape, using true people-powered grassroots movement and organizing. Organizations like TakeAction are important so that regular people like you and me can have our say as a collective voice that cannot be drowned out.
In the last few months, I have had the opportunity to interact with a couple of the campaigns that are seeking the Democratic Presidential nomination. I shared my story and asked them about building power with people-powered organizations like TakeAction MN – and with leaders like me.
Bernie Sanders’ campaign met my story with compassion and empathy.
I felt seen and heard, like a real person and not just a potential vote. Senator Sanders gives me hope that my family and families across the nation can one day live without being crushed by medical and student loan debt.
His campaign gives me hope that my five-year old daughter and her descendants can not only live but thrive in a world that isn’t burning.
2020 is a big year. On a national level, it has become very clear that there are no checks and balances in place to curb the corruption in the White House. Many are choosing party interests over the good of the country. They need to be voted out.
We need to elect people who understand the effects of climate change so our world has a future. The Earth cannot wait. The children in ICE detention centers cannot wait. The people dying from inadequate medical care cannot wait. Folks being crushed by student debt cannot wait. Our public school system cannot wait. People kept in our corrupt and unjust prison system cannot wait. Houseless people cannot wait. 2020 is the year that has the potential to change the entire trajectory of our country.
TakeAction Minnesota endorsed Bernie Sanders for President because his campaign is building a movement. It’s a movement for all of us — young people, immigrants, and people of color. I know that together we can dismantle the systems that work against us in order to build new ones that work for all of us.
I am ready to continue building this movement. Join me.
