We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to fill out our policy priorities survey. We received dozens of thoughtful responses that will help shape our strategy at the Capitol in the coming months and years.
Here’s what we heard.
- Across the board, a major theme that’s top-of-mind for our members is that we prioritize policies that care for people and hold corporations accountable. That means taxing the rich; protecting our voting rights; making sure nobody has to worry about missing a paycheck to care for themselves or a loved one; expanding MinnesotaCare and creating a Prescription Drug Affordability Board to lower prescription drug costs; addressing the climate crisis head-on; and fighting for affordable housing for everyone.
- In response to an open-ended policy question, people mentioned these issue areas most:
💓 Care
🩺 Healthcare & prescription drug costs
🏠 Housing
🌍 Climate change
✅ Voting rights
👩🎓 Student loan debt
✊🏽 Racial justice & public safety
- More than three-quarters of respondents said they’re excited about TakeAction’s focus on issues at the state level. We know that a multiracial, multigenerational, gender-inclusive democracy depends on fair representation at all levels of government, from park & school boards to the state legislature and Congress. Right now, we’re fighting at the Minnesota Capitol to pass statewide policies that invest in people and move us toward the just, joyful future we deserve – and that we know is possible.
- Folks are struggling right now. In response to the open-ended question, “How are you?” the most common words used were “tired” and “COVID.” Those answers bring home the importance of passing policies that make it more possible for us to care for ourselves and the people we love. (The need for community care is clear, too. In 2020, we convened several healing spaces for our supporters. Send us an email to let us know how we can continue to provide the care and support you need in this moment.)
Check out our priorities for the 2022 legislative session – shaped by your responses to our survey.
We’re always looking for storytellers to show legislators how the policies they make have a direct impact on real people’s lives. If you’re interested in providing testimony at the Capitol, email us and we’ll get in touch right away.
